Skatespace is an indoor skateboard park in the heart of downtown White Salmon, Washington. With our twenty-passenger shuttle bus we pick kids up from four different schools in the Columbia River Gorge every weekday for our sold-out After School Skateboard Club. We’re excited to announce that this fall we’re converting the bus to run on recycled waste vegetable oil which we collect from our neighbors at Everybody’s Brewing.
Skatespace founder and director, Mike Parziale, is well-versed in mixing sustainability with mobile-marketing. Over two decades, and a dozen cross-country tours, he has powered diesel cars, trucks, buses, and motorhomes by up-cycling French fry oil into cost-free and carbon-neutral mileage.
2027 Series
In the spirit of sharing information to inspire others to action, we’re filming and editing the process of converting the bus into an organically-fueled Greasebus. In early 2027, our goal is to put out a 5–10 episode series on YouTube, with each episode running about 5–10 minutes.
The format of the project will highlight a community workshop, with about a dozen people learning as we go, participating, and asking questions along the way. From welding up the vegetable oil tank to installing the fuel filters and flipping the switch to sustainable soybean oil, we’ll showcase the process and share it with the world.
